I published this blog post in February 2019, about 2 years in to my coaching practice. Many things have changed since then, but helping clients identify, elevate and pursue their priorities is still a core element of Productivity Coaching. In the run up to my 10 year coaching anniversary this December, I decided to include it as one of the blog posts I’m refreshing. As I like to say, “Always be doing what’s most important!” Whether that is working, networking, going to the dentist, resting or engaging in business owner tasks, if it’s your top priority given everything else on your plate at that time, then that’s what you should be doing. Priorities never get old, and, apparently, neither does this blog post. . .
Failing to distinguish important from urgent tasks is the downfall of busy people trying to get it “all” done. First, there really is no “getting it all done.” This false belief entices us to give our precious time, attention and energy to a never ending task list. Instead, we should be working toward our goals with intention and purpose, and with the hope of reaching a reasonable stopping point each day. Wouldn’t you like to finish the day knowing that the most important tasks got your time and attention?
By identifying and focusing on what is most important, you can get the right things done instead of “all of the things” done. The free online “Prioritizer” by Idea Sandbox is one of my favorite tools for doing just that. Sorting tasks into a prioritized list avoids the trap of urgency or of doing quick tasks instead of important work. Identifying priorities allows us to maintain focus what is most important right now.
Take a long stride toward better time management, effectiveness and productivity with this simple step: use the Prioritizer. Input your 5 or so most important tasks (urgency plays into this, but shouldn’t dominate), and the Prioritizer will help you compare each to the other ones and then produce a prioritized task list. In my experience, if you work down the list in the suggested order you’ll get more done and finish up feeling accomplished and energized. Give it a try!
Coaching can help you identify and pursue your priorities, so you can make efficient progress toward your goals for work and life. Ready to learn more? Contact me for a free 30 minute consultation: 503-734-7232 or heather@tcbcoaching.com
